Road Trip around Southern Germany

A few weeks ago we left Pulau Pef, the small island in Raja Ampat, and traveled back to Switzerland. Now, we are already back on the road. This time for a road trip around Southern Germany. The main reason for the road trip around Southern Germany is a visit to the Abenteuer & Allrad Show in Bad Kissingen. On the way to the fair we have time to visit some other places in Southern Germany.

The adventure of living and working on the small island in West Papua is over and we are already planning our next big adventure. A road trip around the world with our own camper needs a lot of planning and preparation. Which is the right vehicle for us? What equipment do we need? Which route will we drive? These and many other questions have to be answered.

The Abenteuer & Allrad Show in Bad Kissingen is the biggest fair of its kind worldwide. It’s the perfect place to get ideas, inspiration and input for our long road trip. Nowhere else we can meet so many exhibitors with in-depth knowledge about adventures, camping and four-wheel driving in one spot. Around 250 exhibitors, 55,000 visitors and 1,800 vehicles in the camping area making the Abenteuer & Allrad in Bad Kissingen an unforgettable experience.

Our road trip around Southern Germany

We have planned seven days for our road trip around Southern Germany. Much too short to explore the entire area in-depth, but long enough to see a few highlights. We picked the following locations:

The main objective of our road trip to Germany is the visit of the Abenteuer & Allrad Show in Bad Kissingen. There we will spend most of the time. But we also want to enjoy the other destinations as much as possible and visit some highlights. Come along with us and join us on our road trip around Southern Germany.

Enjoyable days with a visit at the opening of the wine festival in Würzburg

The first stop on our road trip is Würzburg in the Franconian wine country. We reach Würzburg in light rain in the late afternoon, check in at the hotel and then head into the city. Our hotel is perfectly located and we reach the city center on foot in around 15 minutes.

Würzburg is a cozy town with many beautiful buildings, great culture and hospitable people. We immediately feel home in Würzburg. We like the beautiful buildings, the cozy restaurants and the good atmosphere. Thankfully during our visit we also have some sunshine and blue skies. Seeing the Residence, the cultural landmark of Würzburg and UNESCO world heritage, is breathtaking.

Amazing atmosphere at the Abenteuer & Allrad Show in Bad Kissingen

The two days in Würzburg were far too short and we had to say goodbye with a heavy heart. But the main purpose of our road trip around Southern Germany is calling. The Abenteuer & Allrad Show in Bad Kissingen has become the largest fair in the world for all-wheel enthusiasts in recent years. For us it’s the perfect place to get inspiration and ideas for the preparation of our road trip around the world. Nowhere else we can find so much accumulated knowledge about adventure, 4×4, camping, off-road and overlanding.

The show is absolutely amazing. So many exhibitors and like minded people in one spot. A camping area with such a huge variety of different off-road and camping vehicles. There are around 1’800 vehicles on the camping area. We are very impressed by the show and have found a lot of inspiration and ideas.

In the footsteps of the German automotive pioneers in Stuttgart

Stuttgart is the biggest city that we visit during our road trip around Southern Germany. Unfortunately, we do not have enough time to see all the attractions. We only have one day and of course this is not enough time for such a big city.

While walking around the city, we have seen some attractions of Stuttgart anyway. We have seen a number of beautiful buildings, cozy restaurants, many shops and large construction sites around the train station. The German Choir Festival is in full swing and makes Stuttgart the German capital of singing. We have heard singing in the streets and restaurants and in front of the new castle.

Due to the rainy weather we decided to visit the two car museums of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. These two museums are perfect for rainy days. We would have loved to see more of Stuttgart, but now we have a good reason to go back again.

Pleasant stroll through Tubingen

The last stop of our road trip around Southern Germany is Tubingen. This cozy university town on the Neckar river is situated on our way home back to Switzerland. We stop for a night. It’s raining cats and dogs when we arrive in the late afternoon. In the evening we enjoy a hearty dinner in a brewery and the next morning we enjoy a tour of the enchanting streets without rain.

We like Tubingen right away and we would have loved to spend more time here. The location on the Neckar with the green island and its beautiful tree-lined alley in the middle of the river, the winding streets, beautiful half-timbered buildings and the hospitality pleased us a lot. We would love to see all that by nice, sunny weather.

When staying in Tubingen, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the Hohenzollern Castle. Perched high on a hill the castle looks like out of a fairytale. From Tubingen it’s only a good half hour drive to this lovely castle.
