10 best restaurants in Sanur

One of the 10 best restaurants in Sanur

The coastal resort town of Sanur is one of the major tourist places on Bali. It is located only 15 kilometers from the international airport of Denpasar and situated on a long sandy beach. The place has everything tourists are looking for. A long sandy beach, hotels and resorts right on the beach, many restaurants, bars and shops.

We like Sanur, because it is by far not as touristy as the much more crowded beaches of Kuta, Jimbaran and Legian. There is a huge variety of good restaurants in Sanur and all are within walking distance. In this blog post we will tell you more about our selection of the 10 best restaurants in Sanur.

We also like the mix of people in Sanur much better then in other places of Bali. Not only budget travelers but also families, long-term travelers and expatriates are to be found in Sanur. We often meet intresting people and start talking with people who have found a new or temporary home in Sanur.

Parallel to the beach you will find the main drag of Sanur, Jalan Danau Tamblingan. Along this road you can find most of the shops, restaurants, guesthouses and you can also access the hotels and resorts at the beach front.

Our selection of the 10 best restaurants in Sanur

There is a huge number of restaurants in Sanur. You can choose between cheap local food in warungs (local restaurants), great Italian pizzas, western food, burgers, vegetarian and vegan. In this blog post, we focus more on the cheaper alternatives. Quite a lot of restaurants you’ll find directly at Jalan Danau Tamblingan. If you are hungry, just walk along this road, look at the wide range of menus and choose what you like best.

Most restaurants are inexpensive but provide tasty food in a cozy atmosphere. Of course there are also some nice and elegant alternatives and some of the upper market hotels and resorts have more expensive restaurants.

Exchange rate as per April 2016: IDR 10‘000 is about USD 0.76

If you want to eat directly at the beach, you can just look for one of the narrow lanes and walk down to the beachfront. There is a footpath along the beachfront and you can choose one of the restaurants. The selection at Jalan Danau Tamblingan is much bigger but there are still some nice options.

Warung Coconut Tree: Our favorite restaurant in Sanur

Address: Jl. Danau Tamblingan No. 68

Our favorite restaurant to have cheap local food or a fresh juice. The best thing about the Warung Coconut Tree is that this restaurant has a sister place at Jalan Tamblingan. The Warung Little Birds is operated by the same people and has the same concept as the Coconut Tree. The Little Birds is often better attended and the Coconut Tree is a bit more quiet.

Nasi Goreng at Warung Coconut Tree. Our favorite restaurant in Sanur.

The staff is super friendly in both places, the food is very good and always freshly prepared. There are mainly local dishes and they all taste super good. The Gado Gado is one of our favorite dishes at the Coconut Tree. The Nasi Goreng and Nasi Campur are other favorites.

We also love the fresh fruit juices, iced teas and iced coffees at Warung Coconut Tree. The Frozen Cafe Oreo has almost as many calories as a meal and it is heavenly.

In both places, the Warung Coconut Tree and Warung Little Birds, there is live music at some evenings. If there is no table available in one of the places, just check out the other one and you can still have the same great food. The Coconut Tree is one of the cheapest restaurants with great local food along Jalan Tamblingan.

Downtown: Best value for money

Address: Jl. Danau Tamblingan No. 142

Downtown has surprised us with a modern setting, the beautiful food, nice menu and still very reasonable prices. We have been here during our last visit a few years ago and it is still a great place to have a meal in Sanur.

The staff is always very friendly and attentive, in a good mood and ready for jokes. The walls of the restaurant are covered with drawings, quotes, names and addresses of patrons who have been to the restaurant.

We really like the local Indonesian food here. The Chicken Satay served on a small grill and the Nasi Goreng are two of our favorite dishes in the Downtown. But there are also salads, sandwiches and pasta on the menu.

Kopi Kiosk: Best coffee in Sanur

Adresse: Jl. Danau Tamblingan 134-156 (right next to Hardy’s shopping center)

The name fits perfectly. It’s all about coffee and it is prepared in a small kiosk like coffee bar. A few seats around the bar and a couple of tables with stools and that’s it. The coffee beans come directly from Kintamani, the mountains of Bali.

The coffee is really good. We tried the cappuccino and the latte. We have been here several times and met some intresting people from all over the world. There are five team members. The Latte art was different, depending on who prepared the coffee but the quality of the coffee was always good.

Massimo: Best italian restaurant in Sanur

Massimo’s is the best italian restaurant in Sanur and produces the best pizzas. Not that we have tried all the different pizzas in every restaurant, but the pizza in Massimo’s is so delicious that we don’t have to try all the others. All the Italian dishes are extremely tasty and authentic. Even the carpaccio with rocket and parmesan is excellent.

Massimo is located at the southern end of Jalan Tamblingan.

The Manik Organik is a small, nondescript restaurant and yoga studio you can easily miss walking along Jl. Danau Tamblingan. As the name suggests, the restaurant uses organic ingredients. There are vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes.

The Bali Pub is kind of an institution at Jalan Tamblingan. It’s  a place with many regulars and a lot of them are from Australia. It’s very easy to get into a conversation with others and the hours pass by very easy.

The Bali Pub is more a pub than a restaurant but they do offer great food too. There is a variety of Indonesian dishes, burgers and pizza.

Casablanca: Dine, Drink, Dance

Address: Jl. Danau Tamblingan No. 120

The Casablanca is the place for live music in Sanur. Every evening, there is some live music and especially on Friday night this place is very popular. The clientele is mixed. There is an extensive drinks menu with shots, cocktails, long drinks and non-alcoholic beverages.

The food is secondary and is more expensive than in other places. There are a few local dishes, pizza, pasta and sandwiches. For homesick Dutch there is even Bitterballen.

La Playa has a stunning location by the sea. The best and most popular tables are of course those directly on the beach. The food is prepared fresh and is delicious. A great restaurant to end a day at the beach in Sanur.

  • Fresh grilled Red Snapper with french fries and salad: IDR 85‘000

Lilla Pantai: One of the coziest restaurants in Sanur right at the beach

Address: Jl. Duyung, Beach Front

The Lilla Pantai was renovated recently and got a fresh touch. It’s a modern but cosy place. There are sofas with coffee tables, a small bar and tables with chairs. It is right at the beach and the tables and beanbags in the sand are especially inviting.

Lilla Pantai is very popular for breakfast. We have never tried brakefast because we had breakfast included at our Guest House. Our favorite at Lilla Pantai is the Nasi Campur. It is delicious, served in a wicker plate and comes with a huge variety of different ingredients.

Adresse: Jl. Danau Tamblingan No.47 (The remises of the resort reach from Jl. Danau Tamblingan right to the beach front)

For those who prefer a peaceful and quiet place directly at the beach front. Villa Shanti is a hotel that also operates a restaurant right on the beach. We had dinner here with our friends from Sanur. It is a quiet place and there a big tables for groups or families.

Address: Jl. Ps. Sindu No.5 (where Jl. Danau Tamblingan changes into Jl. Danau Toba)

At the stands on the night market you can probably find the cheapest food in Sanur. The market is not huge, but it has a few different food stalls. There you’ll find something to your taste for sure.

There is delicious, freshly cooked nasi goreng, mie goreng or satay. At some stalls you can choose your ingredients and compose your own meal. Even freshly prepared fruit juices are available. For dessert we recommend Pisang Goreng, fried bananas.

  1. I am planning a 2 – 3 week trip to Bali for late 2017, so really appreciate the tips here. As for night markets, are there quite a few around Bali? I have heard nothing bought great things about them throughout Asia, so really looking forward to checking some of them out while I am in Indonesia next year.

    • Hi Ray,

Thanks for your message. A trip to Bali is always great. There are so many different possibilities on this island.
There are night markets in many different places. Some are mostly food markets, others are for tourists with lots of souveniers and others are mixed.
Just ask around once you are in Bali and you will find one close from where you stay.
