We have seen the dreamy photos of the amazing cherry blossom in Seoul or other cities in Korea and Japan so many times. Once in a lifetime, we wanted to experience this wonderful natural spectacle and be there, when the wonderful blossoms of the cherry trees transform the landscape into a fairy-tale world. The cherry blossom is celebrated in Korea and Japan. There are festivals that attract huge crowds. The mood is dreamy, expectant and happy. The cherry blossom is a sign that the temperatures are getting warmer, the winter is over and the summer is coming.
When I arrive in Seoul, there is no sign of cherry blossom or spring. It is gray, the sky is cloudy, it drizzles lightly and fog is hanging over the landscape. When I step out of the airport building, a very cold wind hits my face. On the way from the airport to the city center it starts to snow lightly. It is already late afternoon and it is getting darker and darker. After the lush green landscape of the tropical part of Australia, the landscape here seems very dull. That’s not what I expected of Korea.
The first signs of cherry blossom in Seoul
The day after I arrive in Seoul, I start exploring the huge metropolis of Korea. It’s cold, rainy and there are thick gray clouds hanging over the city. Whether it’s only clouds or smog, as Koreans tell me, I do not know. However, it is not nice and I do not feel at home yet here in Korea. After one and a half years in Australia with mostly sunny and warm weather together with Reni, it feels very strange to experience Seoul alone by gray and gloomy weather.
Because of the bad weather I spend the first days in Seoul either in the cosy apartment, which I booked on AirBnB, or in one of the many great museums. Although I see a lot of concrete during my excursions through the city, there are also many parks in Seoul. Unfortunately, the grass is still brown and the trees have no foliage and are just dark skeletons. So everything is very bland, dark and lifeless. Luckily, the weather is getting better every day and temperatures are rising every day too.
On the third day, the sun is back and it’s perfect weather for a hike along the city wall up to Namsan Mountain which is located in the middle of Seoul. It’s still cold but the sun warms my face. And as soon as I am not exposed to the wind, it is nice and pleasant. The vegetation is still in hibernation but I see the first signs of awakening. Some bushes already have some buds. In a sheltered place next to the city wall I even find the first bushes with yellow flowers.
Rain stops the cherry blossom in Seoul
Unfortunately it rains the next day and temperatures drop again. The cherry blossom in Seoul is nipped in the bud. For two days it rains and it is cold and cloudy. Then the weather changes again. The temperature is rising and the sun is coming back. That’s a good reason to drive to the southern side of the Han River in Seoul. On the way from the subway station to the Olympic Park I discover the first cherry blossoms by a small river. What a magnificent splendor.
After visiting the Olympic Park I make my way to Seokchon Park. This park with the Seokchon Lake, the Lotte Theme Park and the giant Lotte Tower is one of the hot spot to see the cherry blossom in Seoul. Seokchon Lake is surrounded by cherry trees and is considered one of the best spots of cherry blossom in Seoul.
It’s late March and the cherry trees in Seokchon Park are not blooming yet but are full of buds. It will not take much longer and the cherry trees will start to bloom. The Cherry Blossom Festival at Seokchon Park has been scheduled between the 5th to the 13th of April. There are still a few days left.
The cherry blossom in Seoul transforms the city into a fairy-tale world
Beginning of April the sun is out again and the temperatures are rising. These are the perfect conditions for the cherry blossom in Seoul and other places in Korea. Meanwhile Reni arrived in Seoul too and together we can experience the magic of the cherry blossom in Seoul. After all, the cherry blossom time is also the time of love and happiness.
Already on the way from our guesthouse to the subway station we see the first blooming cherry trees in a side street. We take the subway to Seokchon Park, where I was a few days ago, and saw all the cherry trees with their buds but without flowers. There is a walkway around the lake and it’s best to walk counterclockwise around the lake.
From the subway station at Lotte Tower we go to Seokchon Park. Around the huge Lotte Tower we see the first cherry trees blooming with white flowers. What a magnificent splendor. The cherry blossom in Seoul is now in full swing. We take a leisurely stroll around the lake, take our time and do the same like the locals. We take hundreds of pictures and selfies. On the east side of the lake there is a platform with benches by the lake. We buy snacks and drinks, sit down and enjoy the cherry blossom in Seoul with hundreds of Koreans.
