The sun is shining through our window and we are greeted by another beautiful, sunny morning. Today is our last day in Vorarlberg in Austria and we want to visit another beautiful place in the mountains. We have planned to take the cable car up to the Sonnenkopf and do a short hike in the morning, before we are leaving the Klostertal.

After a delicious breakfast in the Hotel Post in Dalaas we pack our bags and check out. It’s only a short bus ride to the neighbor village Wald. In Wald we hop in a gondola and float up to the Sonnenkopf at an altitude of almost 2‘000 meters above sea level. Some of the 8-seater cabins are equipped with colored curtains and teddy bears for families with children.

Sonnenkopf – The family friendly nature paradise in Klostetal

The name Sonnenkopf (sunny head) raises our expectations. In fact, we are very lucky and have beautiful weather. The sky is cloudless, the sun is out and it’s nice and warm. Right next to the mountain station of the Sonnenkopfbahn is the big restaurant with panoramic views of the stunning mountain landscape. The Bärenland (bear land) with 30 different play stations located around the Bear Lake guarantees families with their children many hours of fun.

We decide to hike to the mountain station of the Riedkopfbahn and then from there to the Alpe Wasserstuben.

The easy hike from the mountain station directly to the Alpe Wasserstuben takes about 1.5 hours. The Alpe Wasserstuben is open from early July to mid September. Around 35’000 kilograms of milk are processed into butter and alpine cheese. Of course, we try a Sura Kees, the specialty of the Alpe Wasserstuben. The Sura Kees is a delicious Montafon specialty and we like the cheese in the marinade with fresh bread a lot.

Summer activities in Klostertal

Klostertal with the villages Dalaas / Wald, Klösterle, Langen and Braz lies between Bludenz and the Arlberg and is a popular holiday destination. Although the Arlberg expressway brings traffic into the Klostertal, the region is also benefiting because it makes the area very easy to access for holiday guests. The Klostertal extends on a length of around 30 km from Bludenz to the Arlberg pass. The Klostertal has always been an important east-west link and already the construction of the Arlberg railway in 1880 has enabled modern tourism.

Countless kilometers of hiking trails with different grades, the Bärenland on the Sonnenkopf, various mountain bike trails and easy walks through idyllic mountain forests, past flowering alpine meadows and mountain streams offer everyone the perfect condition for summer holidays in the mountains.

We can highly recommend the newly developed Stebok Wäg from Dalaas to Lake Formarin and the Red Wall, the most beautiful place of Austria.

Winter activities in Klostertal

In winter, the Sonnenkopf is a snow paradise for families. The Sonnenkopf guarantees to have snow during the winter thanks to an altitude of up to 2’300 meters and is not dependent on artificial snow. But there is not only skiing in the winter, you can also enjoy other activities like sledding, cross country skiing, winter hiking and snowshoeing. Those looking for even more variety in winter sports can easily access the nearby Arlberg ski region from the Klostertal.

Where to stay in Dalaas in Klostertal

We have stayed in Hotel Post in Dalaas. The hotel has an interesting history. The Austrian Emperor Franz Josef has stayed in this Hotel when he travelled from Vorarlberg to Vienna. The hotel has been renovated recently and there is a new and modern extension with more rooms.

The beer garden is a beautiful place in the summer. We loved to spend a few hours and have some beers in the spacious garden. The weather was warm and so we enjoyed our delicious dinner here too.

How to get to Dalaas in Klostertal

If you arrive by train coming from Switzerland or Germany, just take the line via Feldkirch and Bludenz to Langen am Arlberg. At the train station hop on a Postbus from Langen am Arlberg to Dalaas. If you are arriving by train from Tyrol, Langen am Arlberg is the closest train station as well.
